The story of Naturarena Hohe Warte: Modernization and European Cup
K(empes) & K(rankl) at the Hohe Warte
In the 1980s, the lush green of the Hohe Warte lawn not only shone because of the rising morning sun. World-class ballers found their way to Klabundgasse 11 in Vienna-Döbling in the 1980s. The “Goleador” Hans Krankl came on loan from the Camp Nou in Barcelona to the Hohe Warte in 1980. Thanks to his football skills, the average number of viewers during Krankl's Vienna period rose by more than half to 6,370 per game. Krankl shouldn't be the last hero of the World Championships in Cordoba 1978 to wear the blue and yellow dress. From the 1985/86 season, the Argentinian world champion and World Cup top scorer Mario Kempes laced his shoes on the lawn of the Hohe Warte. Instead of Camp Nou or Bernabeu it was now Hohe Warte and Vienna-Döbling for Krankl and Kempes.
