The story of Naturarena Hohe Warte: Destruction and Reconstruction
Return to the main field
Restoring the badly damaged Hohen Warte stadium was a political and economic challenge. With the financial support of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB), the facility was restored piece by piece. As a result, First Vienna FC 1894 could host a league game at its facility again on September 29, 1951, albeit only at the training ground. The hosts defeat Grazer AK 2:1. After tough negotiations with the USFA and costly repair work, the Döbling team returned to the main field for the first time on March 8, 1953. In front of 15,000 spectators, First Vienna FC 1894 beat Linzer ASK 3-1. The renovated stadium now had a capacity of 32,000 people and offered 7,000 seats. In 1963 the capacity was officially reduced to 24,000 people.
