Friendly First Vienna FC 1894 – Sheffield FC postponed for the time being
The friendly game between Sheffield FC, the World’s first club, founded in 1857, and Austria’s oldest club, The First Vienna Football Club 1894, has been postponed for the time being.
The epochal meeting should have taken place on June 1st, 2020, the day before the pre EURO friendly between Austria and England. The new date of Vienna’s friendly will be announced as soon as the ÖFB, the Austrian Football Association, has defined the new date for the game between Austria and England. The ÖFB and the English FA are currently in discussion about whether and when the friendly match can be played.
A meeting of tradition and history: a combined 287 years of football history and heritage would have met June 1st at the Hohe Warte stadium. The partnership between the clubs is one of the oldest footballing friendships in the world, if not the oldest. Due to the cancellation of the international game and the fact that due to COVID-19 no events can take place in Austria until at least the end of June, the game between Vienna and Sheffield FC has to be postponed. But postponed is not cancelled.
“We are in intensive exchange with the ÖFB and Sheffield FC. We want to catch up on the game as soon as circumstances allow” said Vienna Vice President Kurt Svoboda. "Football is coming home to Vienna, just a little later," said Richard Tims, Chairman of Sheffield FC.
Tickets already purchased would remain valid for the new game date. Ticket buyers who want their tickets refunded will get their money back. Information about a possible reversal will follow as soon as there is clarity about a possible replacement date.
