Nina Burger becomes sports director at First Vienna FC 1894
The Austrian record international will take over the position of sporting director women at the oldest football club in Austria from 01.07.2020 on and will also be available as a player for the blue and yellows.
“Women's football is a very central element that we want to use to initiate a new development in the long term - both inside and outside the club. This is an investment in the future, ” Kurt Svoboda, Vice President of Vienna, explains the strategic and structural realignment. "It is the next logical step in the strategic development of First Vienna, in addition to the men's team, to break new ground in women's football and to get a professional like Nina Burger for the job."
In cooperation and coordination with sports director Markus Katzer, Nina Burger is responsible for the sporting development of women's football at First Vienna. In particular, the 32-year-old is responsible for the squad planning, the budget responsibility up to the management, control and coordination of the entire women's and girls' department.
With the stronger positioning of the women's department, the First Vienna Football Club 1894 is once again breaking new ground and is setting an exclamation mark and taking another step towards professionalizing and expanding the women's department.
A new step in management lies ahead for Burger. “This is a big challenge, a unique opportunity. With the engagement at First Vienna, a new chapter in football starts for me. I am very grateful for this opportunity and would like to use it. This position is a good opportunity for me to advance and develop women's football at First Vienna, as well as women's football throughout Austria, ”says Burger about her new role.
The Lower Austrian can look back on an impressive career in football. The 109-time Austrian team player with a total of 53 goals is also the scorer with the most goals for the Austrian national team. After 14 years, Burger ended her national team career in April 2019. The trained police officer won the championship title in the Austrian women's Bundesliga with SV Neulengbach nine times. After her first international position in the USA, at Houston Dash, the striker went to SC Sand in the German Bundesliga, with which she reached the DFB Cup finals twice. In 2019 she returned to Austria.
The women's football section of Vienna, like all women's football, has seen rapid development in recent years. After advancing to the 2nd division of women, coach Aschot Movsesian's team was in first place in the second season of the league. Only the corona crisis prevented the women from Döbling from being promoted to the first Bundesliga. Burger's commitment is a further signal that Vienna sees great potential in the women's department and will focus even more on promoting women's and girls' football in the future.
“Unfortunately due to the Corona crisis the second division of women was cancelled. That was unfortunate for First Vienna, since the promotion to the top women's Bundesliga was within reach. That is why we will attack again next season and prove that we belong in the top league. I want to do my part for that. First and foremost as a sports director, but also as a player if the team needs me, ”says Burger.
Team training for women was resumed in small groups last week. When the new championship can start is still not sure.
