Vienna Women Ready for Home Clash Against SPG Lustenau / Dornbirn
This Sunday at 12:30 PM, Vienna Women will host SPG FC Lustenau / Dornbirn in the 17th round of the ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga at Naturarena Hohe Warte. The Blue and Yellows are determined to secure another crucial three points in front of their home supporters. With the Championship Round fast approaching, fans can expect an intense and competitive encounter, as every point is now vital!
Building Momentum Ahead of the Home Fixture
In their last outing, Vienna Women battled to a 1-1 draw away at FC Bergheim. Despite a depleted squad due to illness, Mark Dobrounig’s side showed tremendous resilience, snatching a late equalizer to salvage a point. A last-minute winner proved elusive, but the team’s fighting spirit demonstrated their readiness for the challenges ahead.
“We’ve been dealing with a wave of illnesses recently, but I’m optimistic that most of the squad will be back to full fitness by Sunday. We have clear goals for the final games of the regular season and want to take maximum points from both matches to carry strong momentum into the Championship Round,” Dobrounig stated.
Championship Round Secured – Now It's About Pushing Further!
This season introduces an exciting new format: for the first time, the league splits into two groups after the regular season. Despite a difficult start, Vienna Women have secured their place in the Championship Round and currently sit third in the table with 30 points. They hold a comfortable five-point cushion over Sturm Graz, while trailing Austria Wien and SKN St. Pölten by seven and nine points, respectively.
“We want to pick up more points before the split and head into the Championship Round full of confidence. There, we can play with freedom and no pressure. The new format adds even more excitement to the league – and with the top three places securing European qualification, there’s extra motivation for us,” Dobrounig explained.
A Struggling but Dangerous Opponent
SPG FC Lustenau / Dornbirn is coming to Vienna after undergoing several changes during the winter break. Former Bundesliga player Pablo Chinchilla has taken over the coaching role from Klaus Stocker, and there have also been some personnel changes. The departure of national team player Carina Brunold, who moved to SKN St. Pölten, was particularly painful for the Vorarlberg side.
Sportingly, things are not going as hoped for SPG at the moment: the team is in eighth place, level on points with Blau-Weiß Linz and four points ahead of bottom-placed LASK. Since the winter break, Lustenau / Dornbirn has yet to pick up a point and is still waiting for its first goal of the spring season. The record of four losses in four games is sobering – but that is exactly what makes them a dangerous opponent.
“We are aware of the challenges our opponent is currently facing, but that makes these kinds of matches unpredictable. We will not underestimate Lustenau / Dornbirn and will approach the game with full focus,” warned Dobrounig.
